Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
